Grasa
Directed by Mónica G. Carter

Grasa explores the complexities of identity, physical insecurities, and cultural stereotypes. It exists between the grotesque and the beautiful — a grease that leaves a strange taste in our mouths.
Synopsis:Lina, a young first-generation Mexican-American, arrives in Mexico City with the goal of exploring her heritage. Despite initial setbacks, she commits to immersing herself in the local culture in the most “authentic” way possible. A chance encounter with a greasy taco leads her to being kidnapped and drawn into an underground cult of 'grasa,' of grease. A monster awaits beneath the earth, one that forces Lina to confront her deepest fears and insecurities, while awakening a profound transformation of self-identity.
Grasa will engage local taquerías, musicians, and audiences to create a dynamic storytelling universe that lives far beyond the screen.
At the heart of Grasa’s off-the-screen initiative is the taquería collaboration, which brings the film’s themes of nostalgia, homecoming, and cultural identity into a tangible experience. We will partner with local taquerías in both Mexico and the U.S. to host curated evenings where audiences can taste dishes inspired by the film, featuring special recipes from the very taquerías that shape the culinary identity of their cities. These events will eventually result in a recipe book. This book will act as both a cultural archive and a living extension of the film, celebrating the significance of food as a vehicle for storytelling and connection.
After the film, the music of Grasa will come to life in a immersive, multisensory concerts.
